A time based art project: Kat Burns creates pieces that take exactly one hour, no more/less, and sells them for the national averaged hourly wage of $24.75
WHY? How much is an hour of my time really worth? According to Stats Canada, the national average hourly wage for people aged 24-30 is $24.75. That wage is much higher than what many of my peers in the young artistic community are earning. Balancing creative endevours while earning an income is a constant struggle for a lot of people! I strongly believe that one should be able to survive financially while thriving creatively. So how can I make this happen?
The Project: Starting on February 1st, 2011, I will be dedicating myself to working 35 hour work weeks, each week, for the month of February. To clarify, that is 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. Each hour of the day I will create one piece of work that takes exactly fifty eight minutes, leaving two minutes to be packed into an envelope and mailed, totalling exactly one hour. Each piece/hour will be available for sale at $24.75 on this page.
I need YOU: I can't possibly do this without you. In order to make this project work, I have to work for you, and you and you and you. As any good employee does, I will listen to my boss. For the moment I am going to limit myself to what I can do on paper or cloth to facilitate easy storage in my studio.
